Meet the local: Katie Wightman
As part of our Insider's Guide series, we caught up with Katie Wightman of Peace in the Neighbourhood, an installation designer and Edinburgh local, to give us an insight into her favourite spots in Stockbridge.
1. Tell us a bit about your background?
I’ve had a fairly eclectic career up to this point! Almost 10 years ago, I graduated from Jewellery & Silversmithing at Duncan of Jordanston and working in retail whilst making. After a stint curating shows for the Edinburgh Fringe and then teaching barre & yoga, I eventually managed to find my way into the display and visual merchandising team at Anthropologie where I grew hugely both as a person and creatively. After nearly 5 years at Anthropologie I left and began designing and fabricating my own ideas, starting my own business, Peace in the Neighbourhood.
2. Tell us about Peace in the Neighbourhood?
We are a creative studio based in the city centre specialising in unique installations that help bring both events and brands to life. The business started out purely working within the retail & hospitality sector, creating window & internal displays that allowed a business to set themselves apart from their competitors & neighbours. However, over the last couple of years it has morphed to also include larger projects like weddings, product launches and brand activations, which has been an exciting world to get stuck into.
3. What do you love the most about running Peace in the Neighbourhood?
The variety! Really no two days are the same which can bring challenges but also a lot of excitement. I can be working with flowers one day, then wood or fabric the next. I get to work with some really interesting and creative clients which allows me to push the boundaries with materials and shapes so we can create a display that truly speaks to them.

4. How would you spend your perfect day in Stockbridge?
Grabbing a coffee and pastry from Lannan Bakery before a quiet walk in the Botanic Gardens is always a good way to ease into the day. I like to spend as much of my day outside as possible, people watching and getting Inspiration from nature.
I love to potter through the wee streets of Stockbridge as it’s a total haven for independent businesses. Having tried the sandwiches from Mootz recently I’d definitely be stopping in there, and the Pastry Section before heading up the Water of Leith to the National Galleries Modern One. Then its back for a mooch around the many shops in Stockbridge before heading to Smith and Gertrude for a glass of wine, followed by cosying up at The Last Word for the rest of the evening. Basically eat and drink my way around!
5. Are there any hidden gems in Stockbridge?
Stockbridge’s small business scene is second to none in Edinburgh. They wrap their arms around each other and have created such a strong community. The Golden Hare is one of my favourite bookshops and Aetla is the most unique jewellery boutique.
6. What are your favourite bars in Stockbridge?
The Last Word – perfect for cosy cocktails.
Smith & Gertrude – Wine, nibbles and perfect slow afternoon vibes.
The Antiquery – the perfect place for a pint, particularly when the Six Nations is on!
7. Do you have any shopping recommendations in Stockbridge?
Jorum Studio has some of the most amazing and high quality perfume studios I’ve stepped into. Mellis Cheese – a one stop shop to create the most delicious grazing table! Those Were the Days Vintage & Bridal – one of the best vintage clothing curations in the city.
And any & all of the charity shops!
